Je besser die mikrobielle Proteinsynthese und der Stickstoffabbau im Pansen aufeinander abgestimmt sind, um so niedriger sind die Stickstoffverluste in Form von ausgeschiedenem Harnstoff. Im deutschen Fütterungssystem ist es vor allem die ruminale Stickstoffbilanz  (RNB), die eine enge Beziehung zum Milchharnstoffgehalt aufweist.
